To follow on from a previous post on the important of pace comes a recommendation for this film. I don’t need to write an extended review as The New York Times & The Guardian have said it all pretty well. On a personal level based purely on enjoyment this film was a big success for me. The dedication, observation and depth of knowledge was a real inspiration. The delivery with the poise and restraint creating a mysterious world around what can be honestly described as a truly gifted artist.

It’s peculiar how easy it can be to forget or dismiss the talent which can be close to you. As if constant exposure can some how diminish the virtue of that person or persons. However, it seems that it takes very little to regain it. As if the wiping of the short term memory can cause a new found of appreciation for that gift.

When I was younger I spent a summer working in a factory lifting heavy boxes from a low shelf to a high shelf. It was tedious labour but an improvement on the first offer which was to thread plastic balls onto a length of string. During lunches I would often scribble (definitely not considered drawing) to avoid sharing the stale staff room listening to a constant overuse of the microwave. Being as I have always had issues with stuff I’ve made, a high percentage of it often makes it’s way to the bin. On one occasion whilst clearing some boxes I discovered a mysterious drawing and was captivated by it for a second before the realisation that it was one of my own which I had discarded as a waste of paper. I’m certainly not attempting to credit myself for creating something good, but just to see it with new eyes had a great effect, For some reason that memory still carries weight 14 years on.

This in relation to the photography here is absolutely valid (be it mostly by one Berger). Something I would see almost daily and not consider posting on this for site for a reason unbeknown to me. Now looking at it again there is certainly a new appreciation for imagery that I would describe as ‘Beauty’ captured on 35mm.

It’s not that often I re-visit Hopkin movies of the 90′s. However after being convinced to go through Meet Joe Black I wasn’t expecting to me massively impressed with the art selection throughout. There are plenty of pieces that work seamlessly with the set and are incredible paintings. Well worth a re-watch even if it is to keep an eye on the walls in each scene.

More surprising when googling to see if there were any websites that had noticed in the 14 years since it’s release, there wasn’t a single post dedicated to it.

With the ever increasing pace of information delivery I have found myself leaning towards those things with a slower almost hypnotic like pace. Partially due to the respite from the daily consumption and not purely from a singular taste. This film is a good example of something which can be absorbed rather than simply watched.

Photographing good Architecture seems like an easy task but with the majority of digital photographers opting for artificially lit and then photo-shopped to completely falsely any natural light or warmth instead or allowing a space to breathe. However with these photographs and documentation by Allied Works it seems like such a great record of the process and final result of their work.

The design for the Wieden+Kennedy building transformed an abandoned 1908 warehouse into the headquarters for an international advertising agency. The building is home to 400 designers and support staff, as well as non-profit arts organizations including the Caldera Arts Foundation and the Portland Institute for Contemporary Art.

The existing masonry and timber-frame structure was renovated and placed on the National Historic Register. The warehouse was opened to the street with a new mixed-use base of shops and restaurants. Within, workspaces are organized into ‘mini-agencies’ that occupy the building perimeter and contain dedicated resources including conference spaces, kitchens and informal lounges. A new concrete five-story structure rises in the center of the historic warehouse, uniting the many levels of the building into a cohesive whole. This space contains all of the building’s shared resources including a screening room and gymnasium, and centers upon an open auditorium constructed of reclaimed Douglas-fir timbers. By day, physical and visual connections across the atrium promote interaction among the many divisions and disciplines within the agency. By night, the auditorium operates as a public space for gathering, performance, and exhibition.

The architecture was formed by making a clearing within the existing field of structure and filling it with space and light – a building within a building that challenges perceptions of interior and exterior, public and private, old and new.

This search started and ended with Simply Good Music. Curated by Dark Jazzor, it’s features a pretty broad range to suite all moods. Playing through some of the latest entries lead to plenty new vinyl purchases included the above by Gang Colours and Portico Quartet. Well worth a repeat look.
